I made this poster last Thursday at the Reimagine Everything Print Studio. Next time I go I plan to print this and another question, Who are your People? on the fronts and backs of a series of shirts. This open studio is sponsored by artist Lauren Bon at Metabolic Studio, an amazing place with a huge vision that stretches way further than my little poster. Yet when artists get support and resources to let their minds go, big things can develop. Lauren has her hands in many amazing and world changing projects. Check it out at www.metabolicstudio.org
This experience is part of a three month adventure in Los Angeles. Denny and I left Portland, Oregon behind and will be here until the end of January. We are living in Altadena, a somewhat sleepy area north of Pasadena. Our little cottage is in the middle of a fruit orchard behind a house where our landlords Lily and Steve live. We usually live in an ecovillage so we are still maintaining a semi-communal lifestyle.
My personal goal for this time is to expose myself to artwork, artists, and art communities. I believe that LA is an incredibly fertile place for artmaking and experimentation. That was my experience when I first arrived here in 1976 at age 24, looking for adventure.
Back to printmaking at Metabolic Studio. Imagine the perfect conditions for artmaking: stimulating and positive people, delectable potluck dinner, materials, technology, space, and time. I arrived at 5 pm with nothing. No ideas, images, or materials. Just a curiosity and the company of my friend Maria. After helping Maria print her project and wandering around looking at what other people were doing, I had an idea. Studio manager Alex helped me put the text on a screen (which will stay there for others to use) and I was off and running. It was so easy and fun.
