Fruit Portraits
Fruit has long been a popular subject for painters, for good reason. They are beautiful, varied, and filled with meaning. These fruit portraits were inspired in particular by the elegant and exact botanical illustrations by 19th Century artists. I want to show the symbolic elements of fruit as well as the physical shapes to reveal the magic of the natural world. These portraits are 12″ x 17″ encaustic mixed media on board, framed with copper strips.
Mounds and Stones
For about 40 years, I watched my father study and tromp through sacred sites in the landscape—first internationally and then close to home. My father’s passion was astroarcheology, the study of how the planets and stars are connected to the meaning of ancient sacred monuments. When I was a teenager, we took a trip to Ireland, England and Scotland. Our main activity was searching out all the Neolithic earthworks, mounds, and stone circles we could find, no matter if they were across a muddy and cow filled field. Though I was a surly 17 year old, the magic of being among those ancient human built shapes made an impression on me. The stones and mounds seemed alive to me, like humans sitting or lying together.
